Ulagalla Pool Villa

After Sanghamitta, the founder of an order of Buddhist nuns, brought a sacred branch from Buddha’s ‘tree of enlightenment’ to Anuradhapura in the 3rd century BC, the city flourished as the island’s political and religious capital. It thrived for 1 300 years, becoming renowned for its colossal city walls, shrines, public buildings and complicated irrigation systems (which still function today). After an invasion by the Pandyans, Anuradhapura was abandoned, all but disappearing into the jungle until its rediscovery by the British in the 19th century. Subsequent restoration led to its being reestablished as a sacred Buddhist pilgrimage site, and more recently a UNESCO World Heritage Site, housing the Sri Maha Bodhiya (Bodhi Tree) and the Ruwanwelisaya, one of the world’s tallest monuments, surrounded by walls that are spectacularly decorated with 1 900 elephant figures. Once the ancestral estate of local Anuradhapura nobility, this luxury hotel in Sri Lanka features a 150-year-old mansion at its centre, with 20 private ecologically-built chalets across 58 acres of land. As one of the Small Luxury Hotels of the World, with its LEEDS green certificate and own solar farm generating half of its own energy requirements, Ulagalla is a unique boutique hotel. Enjoy the riches of the kingdom or a natural adventure while immersed in luxurious, ecologically-sustainable beauty, both inside and out. The elegantly yet comfortably furnished 1200 square foot suite is ideal for a family. Appointed with 2 bedrooms, surrounding a living and dining area, Nikewewa Villa is a heaven amidst the rice paddies. The 180-degree glass walls allow for a breathtaking view of the 20 acres of paddy field. A swimming pool sits between nature and the suite giving that extra bit of lavishness to an already perfect setting.

Included

Free Wifi Breakfast There’s more to Ulagalla than just the view. Guests can wake up with the dawn chorus and take a guided walk around the estate and beyond. This leisurely 90-minute ramble includes a walk along the banks of Wannemaduwa ‘tank’, a traditional irrigation reservoir built to a design over two thousand years old.

DAY 3 ANURADHAPURA

In the morning enjoy a Backroads cycling journey in UNESCO ancient city of Anuradhapura.

Anuradhapura Backroads Cycling Journey – The Kingdom of Anuradhapura was the capital of Sri Lanka for more than 1000 years in ancient times. This was one of the greatest human civilizations in Asia. The sacred city was named as a UNESCO World Heritage site as well. A branch from the sacred fig tree under which Lord Buddha attained enlightenment was planted in Anuradhapura in 3rd Century BC and this tree is still alive making it the oldest tree on the face of the Earth with a known planting date. Visit the three temples of Mirisaveti, Jetavana and Ruvanweli which align perfectly with the star constellation Orion’s Belt. The only other places that this happen in the world are with the Great Pyramids of Egypt, Mayan’s Pyramids and in Angkor Wat. Cycle through the back roads with your hosted resident guide who will take you through the Inner City where you will witness an amazing side of Anuradhapura, which no one knows even exists, and definitely out of the tourist crowds.

In the afternoon visit Wilpattu National Park in search of leopards, bears, and elephants.

Take a jeep ride in the Wilpattu national park in search of the elusive Leopards, Sloth Bears, Wild Elephants, Wild Boar, Sambur Deer, Spotted Deer, Water Buffaloe and many bird species. The park is one of the best places in the world to see leopards. This is the largest national park in the country and is away from all the jeep madness in Yala. We prefer this park over Yala since we don’t believe in taking a guest to a national park to watch a leopard with 50 other noisy jeeps all around. We prefer to provide you with an authentic and peaceful wildlife experience where both you and the animals will be at ease. Early morning and late in the afternoon are the best times to settle in for some leopard and bear sightings.

Drive back to your hotel.

DAY 4 HATTON

In the morning drive to Hatton ( Approx 6 hours) and en-route visit the Temple of the Tooth, which is the most sacred place in the country.

Visit the Temple of the Tooth which is located in the royal palace complex of the former Kingdom of Kandy, which houses the relic of the tooth of the Buddha. Since ancient times, the relic has played an important role in local politics because it is believed that whoever holds the relic holds the governance of the country.

Check into your tea bungalow and relax for the rest of the evening.

DAY 5 HATTON

Enjoy a White water rafting session in Kitulgala . ( Approx 1.5 hours drive one way)

White Water Rafting – After coming off the slopes of Adam’s Peak, the clear waters of the Kelani River wind their way through the Hill Country of inland Sri Lanka before emptying into the Indian Ocean. The put in for rafting is just upstream from Kithulgala, a small town in the tea country. After a safety briefing and a few pointers on the rafting technique, we’ll jump right into the action. Seven high quality, class II and III rapids and temperate waters make the Kelani a premier introduction to the sport of whitewater or an exciting choice for experienced rafters. The river hosts rapids between grades 2 and 3, with the rafting stretch approximately 6.5 kilometers in length, and taking between 45 minutes to 1.5 hours to complete, depending on water levels.

In the evening enjoy a tea factory visit with your resident Tea Planter.

DAY 7 GALLE

Get on board a private luxury yacht and enjoy a  whale and dolphin watching session in the morning.

Drive to the Mirissa harbor to get on board your yacht for a session of Whale Watching where you will have the chance to witness Blue whales, Sperm whales and Spinner dolphins. You will have an air-conditioned cabin with a bathroom along with a lounge area for relaxation as well.
